Xbox One is shown on display during a press event unveiling Microsoft's new Xbox in Redmond

An Open Letter to the Xbox Team from an Xbox Fanboy

Dear Yusef Mehdi, Marc Whitten, et al.,

November 15, 2002, the way I approached gaming changed forever. As I’m sure you know, this was the date that Xbox Live was released to the general Xbox public. I was hooked. I had moved away from my native New York the year earlier and now had a way to reconnect with my friends utilizing our favorite pastime, gaming. It also introduced me to a whole new community of players who shared my interests. When the Xbox 360 launched on November 22, 2005, I lined up with other enthusiasts excited to play games in high definition and to continue to grow the relationships with the Xbox Live community.

When you announced the details for the Xbox One I was very excited. The digital game sharing, the updated Kinect and live TV integration were especially exciting for me. I understood people’s reluctance to go all digital and felt disappointed when you were forced to backtrack from the game sharing to appease the masses but understood why removing that feature made sound business sense. As rumors began to surface, I called for patience as others within my community said they were ready to jump ship because certain multiplatform launch window titles would be running at a lower resolution than they would on the Playstation 4. I suffered through the head-scratching decisions that you made with the party chat and the Friends list. I even lost a friendship that I’ve fostered over a decade on Xbox Live because I said that we won’t be discussing framerates in a year the same way we’re having these discussions about Tomb Raider:The Definitive Edition today.

I’m very excited to be an owner of the Xbox One. I think it’s a fantastic console and I look forward to other people being able to share in its greatness. Having said all of that, I don’t know if you like me the way that I like you, Xbox. Why do I say this? It’s all about the gifts. What do I get for my loyalty? I gave you $500 and you gave me? A free character (Jago) on Killer Instinct and an achievement worth no points. If I was any other market save the UK, you would have given me Forza Motorsports 5 along with the aforementioned game and achievement. If I was in the UK, I would have received Jago, Forza 5, the day one achievement AND FIFA 14! What a way to show your loyal LOCAL fans that you really appreciate their support!

I own a Playstation 3 and am a Playstation Plus member. I used my Playstation 3 primarily to play exclusives but also was able to catch some very good games that I had missed by having the ability to download them directly to my console as a result of my PS+ membership. As I’m sure you’re aware, most of the titles available via PS+ are less than 18 months old. If you compare the relevancy of the games you’re providing in your “Games With Gold” promotion to the offerings made available for Playstation Plus, it’s quite frankly embarrassing for the Xbox owners. The only personal positive I can state is that it was because of Playstation Plus and all of the games I had installed locally on my console that I realized that I was ready for an all digital console gaming future. If I had decided that all I wanted was a gaming console this past November, I could have saved myself 100 dollars and bought a Playstation 4 and I would have, beyond the games I purchased, also been able to play great indie titles like Resogun and the outstanding Outlast for no additional money. I however, wanted a multi-media machine, a task that the Xbox One performs more than admirably.

You’re losing ground in the UK and realized that it’s economically viable to lower the British price of the console from the very weird 430 pounds to a much more palatable 400 pounds. I get that. You’re releasing a limited number of Xbox Ones with a digital code for the game everyone wants, Titanfall. I get that too. My question is “What do I get?!”. Where’s my thank you for all of the years of patronage? A perfect opportunity to throw us a bone and win some nice PR in the process was with the Christmas Eve launch of the very mediocre, Halo: Spartan Assault. “Here’s our Christmas gift to you from us, Halo!” or something to that effect (I’m not a marketer).

Where I’m from loyalty and friendship means something. I’ve been very loyal to you for 11 years but I’m starting to get the feeling that new friends and distant friends get more recognition from you than I do. I’m also seeing that the other guy treats his friends pretty well. If this is how you’re gonna treat your friends going forward, maybe we shouldn’t be friends anymore.

Sincerely,

Cicero Holmes aka Stubby Stan

You’re right that some people can’t get the console. I understand that. My thing is that those of us in their home market that bought the system got less than people in other markets who also bought the system. So the argument isn’t about the ability to buy the system. It’s about MS’ ability to take for granted the group that’s stuck by them the longest. Loyalty should mean something when you’re openly incentivizing the rest of the world to come on board with free games and such.

Ummmm because we paid equivilant of about 720 dollars in the UK. Even with price cut we’re paying 670 dollars with free Titanfall which you can get for 500!

Hi Phil! Thanks for reading and commenting.
I don’t disagree that you pay more USD for the console b/c of our shitty exchange rate (that’s a debate for another time). The thing is that you guys ALWAYS paid more for your consoles. You didn’t pay the British equivalent to $299 for your PS3 or Xbox 360 so I wouldn’t expect that you’d do that now. BUT you are getting incentives to purchase this console when we’re not. Like I said in the letter, even if they offered Halo:Spartan Assault for free I would feel like they’re trying. They instead try to make us pay a premium for even that piece of shite.

What about the machine you paid good money for? Why are people so focused on being entitled to free stuff? I realize that others offer really good incentives to use their platforms: Sony has PS+, Steam has great sales. MS has a Kinect. MS has azure. Those are incentives to use the MS platform. We shouldn’t feel entitled to free stuff on top of it. If they offer it, great. But you’re hardly being neglected. You just don’t value what they’re giving you as much (that’s okay, too.)

Jakerle. First off thanks for reading and commenting. I really appreciate it.

All of your points are very valid. MS does have Kinect & azure. I believe in the platform and the direction that they were taking. It’s the reason that I bought an Xbox One over a Playstation 4. The point that I’m making is that all of the other Xbox One owners in foreign markets got everything I got & then some. It’s about being equitable.

It’s difficult to find an analogy that fits but I’ll say that I wouldn’t feel entitled to free stuff if it weren’t for the fact that MS is openly offering free stuff to other people. If the only comparisons from which I had to draw were what other companies are doing, the tone of this article would be much different. If I felt that jilted over the fact the THEY got stuff but WE didn’t, I could easily choose to purchase something different. The problem is that some of US (the WE from before) are getting more than the rest of US even though we bought the same thing at the same time.

I hope that makes sense. If it doesn’t, please feel free to tell me.

I don’t think it matters. People are offered different incentives in different markets. Think of the free games offered in other markets as balm to the fact that their gold accounts don’t get them access to all the cool apps you have access to living in the US. I’m sure plenty of people would trade in their free copy of Forza or Fifa for access to Netflix and the NFL, or would at least think twice about it.

I get that. If we were to take your example and apply it here I think I would say is: What if MS wasn’t giving other markets free games and stuff as a balm for the things that are available in the US market but isn’t available in their’s? That’s what is happening in North America when it comes to our Xbox One incentives.

I got fifa free with my xbox one. At first I thought it was great, but then after 2 games I realised I hate fifa and remembered why I dont buy any fifa games. So yes it was free for me, but its not a game I play even when it is installed on my system. So in the end the free game was pointless for me and made no baring on me buying the console.

The point of this post is simply that I agree, you dont buy a console based on what they may or may not give you for free or as an incentive. I bought it as I preferred the launch line up with DR3 and Titanfall.

Oh and netflix works fine in with a decent DNS changer on the X-1. I love watching netflix US or netflix UK on my X-1, which is in a country that does not have netflix.

Sd, thanks for reading and commenting! Sucks that you don’t like FIFA. I think much like you, a major factor in my purchasing decision was the multi-media features that X1 provides. I’m VERY happy with them. Doesn’t mean that I’m so happy with them that it won’t stop me from making a PS4 my gaming console of choice. It DOES mean that I won’t consider selling my console.

But why should you be happy with it if the other guy is offering a better deal? Sure, it’s MS’s right not to offer more. But, the consumer should go with who is offering the best deal to the consumer. Otherwise you just get companies that will increasingly offer crappy deals because, hey, the consumer goes for it. The company has to look out for itself (including figuring out what the consumer will or will not go for) and the consumer should look out for himself. That’s how capitalism works to keep things in balance. Not the consumer worrying if it’s “fair” they get free stuff or not. Consumer should be worrying about who has the better offer and let the companies figure out what they can afford to offer.

Hey now, I was on the internet back when we had these things called newsgroups (which I honestly miss to tell the truth) and Netscape was this new thing that made web browsing much more fun (a more graphical interface) and my email was read off a unix server (Hell, I still do that).

Oh yeah, and MMOs were things like muds and Mushes and you could find one that people did more than just level up killing mobs but actually roleplayed characters in the Mud to form all sorts of stories and such (I really miss that. If I could find an MMO where people actually did that still I totally could get into it. But it seems MMOs are for people who just like to kill things to level up which gets boring and repetitive imho).

Whippersnappers these days I tell ya (oh shoot, I think I’m showing my age, heh).

Xbone sucks. instead of sticking with a company that don’t give freebies and have horrible personel aka Major Nelson, Albert Penello etc… Come to PS4. 100$ less, better specs, game focused and no additional BS like hmm lets see having Xbox Gold iot play ESO and still pay the monthly fee??? makes no sense. MS really messed it up from E3 and the bandwagon of negative PR won’t stop. Kinetic itself was a total mess to begin as no one uses it for gaming.

I own both and feel like the ps4 is better with a few freebie games that were offered. x1 has only killer instinct as free games and that is very very limited. I am enjoying forza and dead rising, but the ps4 has the free games to separate itself. Plus the installation on X1 is ridiculous. You should know that ps4 doesn’t take as long, background download while playing, and actually auto downloads not like the x1. And I’m not going in details but the X1 party/friend features took a major step backwards compared to the 360 or ps4

StubbyStan…You should have known what MS was about during the RROD era. They recognized it as their fault and instead of doing a recall, they decided to open up a window to fix for free. However, you were only given 30 additional days of warranty. To top it off if your system suffered the RROD once this window closed you were fugged.

Now look at the PSN hack situation. I personally was effected but I knew several who were not. All of us got 4 free downloads from Sony as a result, regardless of whether or not you were effected. It was just a courtesy thing.

Wake up bruh. Enjoy your X1, but you’d be a fool to think that MS or any American company is looking to do the right thing with their backs against the wall. Not in this day at least.

JacksJus, I think you’re a little mistaken about the RROD warranty. I believe it was a 3 year warranty, not a 30 day one. Having said that, if you bought yours second-hand or had to bought multiple consoles (like me), you were still angry about it.

As for the Sony hack, I was an owner of the PS3 and all of us that had it and entered our credit card info were affected. Anyone who thinks otherwise is kidding themselves. This, to me, is much more egregious than a (or even multiple) hardware failure. That being said, Sony mea culpa and subsequent gifts were very, very nice!

I don’t know if MS will still care. I don’t think they really know how to compete. Their money makers are things that they have a de facto monopoly on and that’s really the only way they know how to compete, is some how force the competition to go away (not by actually offering stuff people want). It’s MS’s M.O. honestly. While some companies do learn the hard way, MS has money and just leans back on that while they try to push things to run their way.

I’m inclined more to believe with some one for example that even if MS starts losing Live Gold memberships due to crappy policies, that they would just take their toys and go home rather than change policies to entice people back (Ok, I guess the xbox isn’t profitable, sell it off/get rid of it/etc).

Alice, I opened this comment to disagree with you but then I reread your comment. It’s a great one! There’s a lot of truth within it. The one thing I will say is that MS jumped head first into a new industry when they designed the original Xbox. They were brash and forward thinking. This attitude led them to becoming an industry leader in the biggest entertainment segment in the world.

I’m not positive that if they start to lose ground in the console space they’ll turn tail and run but I’m not sure, given their current leadership, what they will do. In fact, the new CEO of the Xbox division is the same guy who said during the MS CEO search that he would sell off the Xbox division and kill Bing if he got the job. That’s not really a great omen for Xbox’s livelihood at Microsoft.

Alice, thanks for a great comment and for reading the piece! It’s greatly appreciated!

MS at the time was good at becoming leader in stuff (I actually felt threatened by them which is why I never got into xbox, at the time I was refusing to let MS get another monopoly in another market… I have always preferred Macs and I think either Mac was still threatened to disappear or at least I still was under the impression it would. And to be fair I also blamed Apple for it as well – just cause I like the product doesn’t mean I can’t be annoyed at the maker).

I’ve actually softened my stance on them as they have let themselves become way less of a threat. But… I am not really impressed with in general how they decide to push consumers to do stuff. Stuff like when they wanted Office to become a subscription product but at least had enough common sense to know they couldn’t just get rid of the old way of actually buying the software, they decided if you bought it you only could install it on one computer ever (trying to make it a horrible deal). Luckily there was enough backlash that they reversed that (now it’s reasonable, you can have it on one computer at a time). But the fact they even tried it and waited for it to fail shows how much they like to push consumers to see what they can get away with (after all, any other company that has competition would not experiment with that and lose a lot of marketshare and people finding other products. MS relied on consumers not having much elsewhere to go and having the money to just recover if they made a major snafu).

I’m actually surprised they 180’d on their initial policies so quickly (it must have had horrible pre orders for them) because I expected they would wait to see how sales pan out first. I guess the pre orders spoke loud enough. I also am not impressed with what htey consider “value” on their Live Gold membership. Gee, value is you get to actually use your xbox for the stuff we claimed it would do. Really, MS? (I’m not upset about the MP behind a paywall but pretty much everything else like netflix and even internet browsing and hell, even being able to send and reply to messages on their forums from your computer <- yes, MS is that ridiculous).

Stuff like that has me once again having a bad image of them in general and how they work. Just, if you look at the policies they try to implement, what they find is "value", and how they try to push consumers, it is obvious they are used to telling people to "deal with it" and people going ahead and doing so because, where else are they going to go? I think it's a new concept to MS that people can go elsewhere.

Yeah, come on over to the PS4.

Less expensive system, more powerful hardware, superior multiplatform software, superior online infrastructure, less expensive online infrastructure, less features locked behind a paywall, more up-to-date free games with the paid subscription offering, a greater quantity of quality exclusives, more indie support, a larger installed base means a larger community, and to top it off you can trade in your XBO for a PS4 straight-up at GameStop, not extra money needed (provided they have a PS4 in-stock). PlayStation just beats X-Box this gen across the board.

“A greater quantity of quality exclusives”…. Really? KZ and Knack vs Forza, DR3, Ryse, PvZ… Superior online infrastructure is also wrong… The rest is pretty much right, but as everyone on the ps4 camp keeps saying, “It’s all about the games,” sadly the games department is still in favor of Xbox. You guys have a great selection of indies currently but exclusives definitely belong to xbox.

I dont agree that the games department are in favor of the Xbox One. Lets do a little comparison of the main games using metacritic shall we.

        KZ: SF – 73, DR3 – 78
        Knack – 54, Ryse – 60
Resogun – 84, Killer Instinct – 73 (Im comparing these two since they are digitally sold 2nd party titles)
        Driveclub – ???, Forza 5 – 80

If it wasnt for Driveclubs delay, the PS4 launch lineup isnt that much lacking actually. DR3 and Ryse are scoring within similar range as KZ and Knack though granted, they are higher. While Infamous: SS and MLB 14 The Show are coming out next for the PS4, what are the next big exclusives coming out for the Xbox One?

If you are gonna say Titanfall, I would then say that the PS4 is gonna be getting Planetside 2. Both are online only fps that are also available on PC. Now how about Quantum Break and the next Halo? Well the PS4 has The Order 1886 and the next Uncharted. All 4 of these games dont have release dates yet.

Point is, unless you feel games like Crimson Dragon, Peggle 2 and Zoo Tycoon are noteworthy, the Xbox exclusives arent really better than the PS4 in both quality and quantity. Bear in mind, Im not saying the PS4 games are better, as it is up to each gamers individual taste. If anything, Im just saying their equal right now. But we know that when it comes to first party exclusives Sony always has the upper hand, as shown in the last gen.

First off, I would like to thank you for a well written and educated response, seems like civil conversations are hard to come by. I was speaking of the current state of games, x1 has the advantage. If Driveclub was a launch title and it was able to compete with forza, it would be a lot closer, but forza is a REALLY good racer, and won racer of the year last year at dice.

I think it is a bit of a stretch to compare the x1’s flagship title to a f2p mmofps. I have played ps2, quite extensively actually on pc, and it is no titanfall. I think it is fair to compare inFamous:SS to titanfall, in terms of them both being flagship titles. Speaking of shooters, PvZ is also doing pretty well.

I am pretty sure Kinect Sport resort will be out before MLB:The show, and I am expecting similar reviews, but KSR will outsell MLB by a fair margain. I also expect it to be a bigger system seller than everyone thinks. Casual gamers eat this stuff up.

I would agree with you about the QB=/=The Order, and Halo=/=Uncharted. Different play types but new IP vs established series, and while the order is significantly more hyped than QB I expect it to do pretty well.

I would put peggle 2 up against any of ps4 indie titles that are out currently, the game is highly reviewed and, while not free, currently the only game I have 100% cleared on my x1. I would rather put peggle 2 vs resogun as a metacritic score of 77 and put KI against Outlast.

I am just tired of all the ps4 gamers putting down the x1 for no reason, cause as of right now, you guys have higher res. multiplats and more free content. Better exclusives are in the eye of the beholder, because I get more play out of my Halo, GeOW, and Forza, than I do out of Tlou, Uncharted, or inFamous. Personal preference, but we Xbox owners are really not suffering.

And i thank you, for your well written response as well. As you said, better exclusives are in the eye of the beholder and i do agree. I do give Microsoft credit for trying to get as much exclusives as they can for the Xbox One so far, even if most of them are third party. This will keep Sony from getting complacent as competition is always a good thing.

I compared Titanfall with Planetside 2 because of the similarities in genre and formula (online only multiplayer shooters) while also being pseudo exclusives since their on PC. Ive not played PS2 before so i cant comment on if i think its better but I do respect your opinion that Titanfall is the better game. However I do know many people who thinks PS2 is one of the best online shooters out there right now. Its metacritic score of 84 shows its no slouch. In the end though, as with Driveclub vs Forza 5, we would have to wait until Titanfall is released to make a proper comparison to see if the game really is as good or even better than PS2.

Regarding the MLB 14 The Show and Kinect Sports Resort comparison. While i dont deny that KSR has the higher chance of selling more, its a bit of a stretch to directly compare them against each other since their both different kinda games targeted at different audiences even if they both deal with sports.

Anyway, I think time will tell. Until then, happy gaming 🙂

KSR and PvZ, really? Come on man, what kind of gamer are you? And KZ is alot better than people say it is. Just the Owl alone makes its good, then you got the touchpad controls, which btw i thought i would care less about. Then you get the variety in levels from more linear levels to open world levels, then there’s the graphics. People, just like to hate on it because of their fanboyism, Now im not saying its perfect but how can the same crowd that hates it, then turn around and sweat Titanfall? It just doesnt make sense. A FPS is a FPS. People complain that KZ is mediocre, but explain to me how Titanfall isnt mediocre, and dont say mechs cuz KZ3 had mechs in its online mode.

First off, I am obviously a less judgmental gamer than you. I happen to own pvz and it is a very smart 3rd person shooter, look at its reviews, critics seem to think more of it than KZ. Don’t know if you ever played the other Kinect Sports game, but they are stupid fun. Simply a goofy social game that people can play over a few beers, lots of fun. Please don’t judge someone’s tastes in games. It’s just rude.

I don’t know if you have played TF or are just jumping on the hate wagon, but it is pretty good and the most innovative feeling part of it the height and openness of the game. Yea, there are mechs, but that is not what sets it apart. Before you judge a game, you should play it, I have played KZ and I wasn’t impressed, and saying a first person shooter is a first person shooter is dumb, and you know that. There are degrees of innovation, graphics(which kz has in buckets), gameplay, and replayability. Not all FPS are created equal.

Just saying I’m still getting that titan fall plays like cod with freerunning and mechs or maybe the issue is just that’s how everyone was playing it… Personally I’d actually rather play bf4 or killzone to titanfall. I know it was a beta but it was more a demo/server test. Killzone was really underrated I’m not a massive fan of it’s multiplayer but it’s singleplayer was really good fun-not sure if second son is comparable to titan fall due to one being MP only fps and the other being a 3rd person sandbox game.

KillZone underrated? it has the worst A.l. in history of FPS and you say its underrated? no matter what this game can never be compared to the likes of Titanfall or CoD or BF or Halo or any FPS. I played for 20+ min. and I was done (trade it for in store credit)

I sincerely hope you are joking? Killzone’s AI is vastly better than COD’s and titanfall’s AI is abit different as it seems to just sort to be more like bots in MP than singleplyer bots. More fool you then for not giving a game a decent chance to get out of it’s singleplayer.

Killzone 2 was the only ok game on multiplayer but I stop playing it a month later and never went back, and the single player is just nothing to talk about on any KZ game, but I give a chance to KZ SF since I choose ps4 over XB1 and still don’t like it I guess im just not a KF fanboy. its just that the AI totally piss me off on how stupid it is.

I’ll address the your two points.

When I refer to a larger quantity of exclusives I’m referring to PlayStation’s portfolio of exclusive content rather than what you currently see on the PS4. PlayStation’s exclusive portfolio covers a multitude of genres with great games and franchises such as Drive Club, Folklore, God of War, Gran Turismo, Heavenly Sword, InFamous, Jak & Daxter, Killzone, Little Big Planet, MLB: The Show, PlayStation All-Stars, Quantic Dream projects, Ratchet & Clank, Resistance, SOCOM, Team ICO projects, The Last of Us, The Order: 1886, Uncharted, WarHawk, and the list goes on.; I’ll leave indies out of this lineup as you’ve accepted that fact.

Compare that to the exclusive X-Box portfolio: Alan Wake, Fable, Forza, Gears of War (now), Halo, Project Spark, Quantum Break, and Titanfall, that’s really it. Alan Wake is cool but who knows if there’ll ever be another one. Fable has fallen off the map but MS might be able to bring it back. Forza underwhelmed for a next-gen game as its feature set was gimped in order to make the game perform at 1080p / 60fps (Forza 4 had more features as does Gran Turismo). Another note about Forza, it actually rates lower than Gran Turismo 6 on Metacritic by a point, so while DICE may prefer it the general consensus is that a PlayStation exclusive from last gen is the better game, it just doesn’t look as nice because it’s last-gen. Gears of War was about to go multiplatform until M$ bought the IP; many are saying Gears was right for 7th gen but not fit for 8th, we’ll see what happens. Halo is X-Box’s only real meal ticket and it may be getting a little long in the tooth; I know a few people who were excited when they watched the reveal trailer until they realized it was a Halo game. Project Spark could hold a LOT of promise, this is a game to keep an eye on. Quantum Break I anticipate being bad, there’s just a bad linkage between licensed TV / movie games. Granted, this is a new IP with the show being developed to integrate with the game, but I can’t see this mediums playing nice with one another. Titanfall may be good, though in my opinion it’s a flashier but more shallow version of TimeGate’s “Section 8” franchise (they’re almost identical aside from graphics), but all the sequels will be multiplatform and I’m sure you can guess which console they’ll perform better on.

Addressing superior online infrastructure, how is it wrong to say that X-Box is inferior? Is it’s Party System & Cross-Game Invites working flawlessly again like it was on the 360 and compared to the PS4? How’s cross-game chat, is it working flawlessly like it is on PS4?

X-Box One just doesn’t have a leg to stand on, that’s why it’s being trounced in sales. At the end of this generation it’s going to be PS4, Wii U, and XBO in that order for sales; PS4 has already surpassed Wii U worldwide and is selling faster than the Wii from last gen.

I think your thoughts on the quality of the each console’s exclusive is very subjective. I own Forza 5 and while limited in scope, is incredibly beautiful and fun to play. I think it’s fair to say that Sony has the second strongest first party lineup in behind Nintendo. The problem is that all of those great titles didn’t sell well when compared to the Xbox 360 exclusives.

As for Titanfall, don’t underestimate how well this game will move X1s. Then while there have been more issues than there should be with party chat on the console, the voice quality and the flexibility with which you can use it is FAR superior than the PS4’s current offerings.

As for your console order prediction, if the WiiU beats the X1 @ the end of the generation, I’ll give you my Xbox! NO WAY that’s happening. Xbox One install base is already 75% of the WiiU install base after 4 months on the market!

It costs $470 to manufacture and distribute the Xbox One. It costs $380 for the PS4. I’m sure as the price for manufacturing goes down, the incentives for purchasing will increase–they’re not getting rid of Kinect any time soon since it costs $75 to manufacture, and as such, would then sell a console at a weird $450 for a $395 selling point (doubting here that they’d sell it for $400, at basically a loss). I’m sure it would be cheaper if they didn’t have the extra multimedia components, but even then MS will want at least a $30 profit. They’d throw in free games if not for the expense bared in manufacturing. And MS has plenty going for it profit-wise, Sony is losing a lot of money and wants to win. This is obvious if you follow Sony in the past 4 years, business-wise it has been eaten alive and they’ll go out with a bang if they have to.

Meanwhile the Xbox One costs around $720 equivalent in UK, and argue it all you want, not only is that a huge profit, but it lacks a ton of features, a significant amount in online services. Giving away a few games to them is still going to leave them with a theoretical $100 profit after taking out exchange and distribution. Do you want to pay $720 for an Xbox One? I honestly think you deserve more, but you bought the wrong console and the wrong company wanting more. Microsoft is not a company keen on giving you a steal unless whatever they’re making is DOA to the market, and then you’ll buy one at an incredibly cheap price and afterwards they’ll kick it under the rug and never speak of it again *cough* Zune *cough*. You’re going to be angry at MS this entire gen, trade it in for a PS4 and buy Titanfall for PC. I can even suggest to you a cheap build that can do everything the Xbox One can do and more, beating it performance-wise for about $720 (plus there’s a decent computer in there). I don’t even own a PS4, and I know as a PC gamer that the PS4 is the better deal because they got their ass whooped last gen, much like the Xbox 360’s reign after they got their ass whooped by the gen previous. That is history, my friend.
Great article, and good luck with your Xbox One. I hope it gets picked back up but the community always picks the better-valued and louder-voiced console, your friends will be elsewhere. Cheer up. Microsoft still loves you, because you paid into a company that is already winning the profit war, but not the people’s choice.

151! Great points, indeed! Thanks for making them and reading! I will say that the price that Europeans pay for their consoles is always more than Americans pay. I’m pretty confident the price was not a factor in determining whether to give the rest of the world freebies. Having said that, your point about how features limited the X1 is out of the box b/c you’re not in America to take advantage of the TV features is the most cogent one I’ve read to challenge my arguments.

      Ass whooped?

As of the date the ps4 / x1 started selling (the new gen)…. It is pretty much universally recognized that they both sold 80m units… I’d hardly call that a whooping… Less than the ps1 / ps2, ok… A whooping? Naw…

I don’t believe the PS4 or Xbox One have sold 80m units, though the PS3 was sold for a loss for the majority of it’s lifespan. It began with a loss of around $240, the 360 had losses half that at $120. That means the PS3 was sold for $600 while costing $840 to manufacture, this doesn’t even count distribution. The Xbox 360 managed to recompense it’s losses by having a paid subscription, this eventually would reap huge profits for Microsoft, whereas PSN, to stay relevant with it’s lacking features, was free. PS3 was sold at a loss until 2012. It didn’t generate hype until it actually started having a collection of exclusives in 2009, and it didn’t start flying off the shelves until after significant price cuts and the introduction of the PS3 Slim. Price cut after price cut, the console was a loss for a long time, you can look this up it’s all over the internet. I would call that an ass whooping.

VERY well said. My PS4 came with a $10 voucher for PSN, a Music Unlimited month and a month of PS+ whichgot me 2 great games. My XBox one on the other hand said DAY ONE on the controller (big deal) and came with a useless achievement. I had to buy Live for $10 more than PSN just to get Shadow Jago – Why?? And since I don’t live in the US, most of that muti media stuff doesn’t even work for me. Well, at least some of the exclusives are fun, despite not looking as good as PS4 games.

Thanks for reading, status! I would have to disagree that Westerners only play three titles. I know that’s a gross over simplification of the facts but I think that’s the perfect reason to give away a game not in those three genres away for free. What if instead of just giving away Jago, they gave away all of Killer Instinct? KI is a great fighter & I’m happy I own it but would be even happier if it didn’t cost me anything. Maybe in giving away a great game in an off genre that doesn’t sell they’ll expose some gamers to a genre they never explored before and turn them into fans.

As for the X1’s graphic fidelity…it’s a magnitude greater than the 360!

Maybe I muddied my thoughts about the price drop while writing the letter. I don’t care that the price is dropping. I completely understand why it needs to drop. 430 is weird amount to pay for a product, irrespective of if it’s American dollars or British pounds or European, uh, Euros. I know this may sound contradictory, but, if you’re in the States and are thinking about getting an Xbox One, I would say, now is the time to get one. You can get the Titanfall bundle for 500 bucks. There are some really great exclusives coming down the pipe and the Kinect integration is truly like nothing you’ve ever experienced before.

The fact is that I really love the experience that I have with my Xbox One but if I feel like the MS isn’t willing to recognize that being equitable to all of their markets is in their best interests, I’ll happily make the PS4 my primary gaming machine and buy my games there.

I am in the beta program and things are seeming smoother. I am looking forward to using the new party system (Wanna play some PvZ later?) and streaming support.

They still have a way to go. Sony is spanking them right now with the free games with PS+ and the frame rate/resolution stuff. I don’t think that’s going to be a thing of the past after MS updates their dev kits/SDKs. In six months the playing field will be far more even and we will know more about the second generation of games (HALO!).

You should do another state of the Xbox union after E3.

Dan! As always, you’ve hit the nail on the head with your comments. Thanks for being the supporter and friend that you have been. I’m also in the X1 beta so we should chat it up b/c I want to see what it’s like.

I can’t wait for E3! I’m not sure what the hell we’re gonna do but I do know it will be big!

Tired of every gamer feeling entitled only in the game industry do its customers think that after they purchase a product they should get free stuff. Yes there selling the xbox one cheaper in the u.k because its not selling as well. If you buy a car you dont get free gas months after you purchase it just because there selling it cheaper months later. So assuming you should get free stuff for buying a console three months after purchase is ridiculous. They are going to start doing games with gold here before too long but crying that you should get free stuff just makes you seem immature and ignorant to how business is done in the world.

Hi Jordan! Thanks for visiting, reading, and commenting.

If we take your analogy of purchasing a car, there are programs where if within 30 or 90 days of purchasing the vehicle the company offers a promotion, you become eligible for that same promotion. The understanding there is that small percentage of revenue lost is well worth the good PR they receive as a result of providing that feature. Or more importantly, it’s better than the bad PR they’d received as a result of “screwing over” the consumer.

I know some people read this and feel that I feel entitled. I’d say you’re right. I feel entitled to the same offers that MS has made to consumers in other markets. If you’re offering EVERYONE else in the world a free game day one, why are you not extending the same offer to the North American market?

I hope this answer to your questions make me seem a little less immature. I AM immature but hopefully about other stuff and not this. Please be sure to come back to visit the site again. Also, check back on Monday when episode 5 of the Spawn On Me podcast posts. I spend a fair amount of time talking about this issue.

Those who knew better did not purchase from launch on either console. Unfortunately I haven’t and rightfully so. This letter is USELESS!…..because I’m American, LOL

Jack are you saying that you didn’t buy the new consoles at launch or that you did? I’m not sure.

Either way, I really appreciate you visiting the site, reading the article & commenting. Please be sure to come back again.

  • I feel as though I shouldn’t agree with him… but I can’t help but relate to some of the ‘quarrels’ he presents in this open letter.

Am I entitled to these “gifts” ? lol No. But the UK price drop, plus the bundled Titanfall, plus the UK/EU bundled launch titles (FIFA/Forza) really does bother me. North American buyers (and others I’m sure) got stiffed on the bundled launch titles.

I can’t complain – this is what you knowingly sign up for by being an early adopter – but I don’t disagree with Cicero Holmes aka Stubby Stan.

TheRedButterfly, your arguments are completely valid. Your humor is also obviously awesome!

If it weren’t for the the bundled worldwide Day One launches my argument would be a much different one. It’s those decisions by MS that make me feel entitled and neglected, rightfully so, in my opinion.

Xbox 360 versus PS3, it’s exactly the same case with the Xbox One and PS4. It’s all about the games, so that’ll be decided as time goes on. In the US, the Xbox One and PS4 don’t need a price drop, but if the Xbox One is dropping too far behind the PS4, then it’s justified. £300 for the Xbox One is the US, the UK price was £430, but recently dropped to £400, which isn’t enough. Some retailers are selling the Xbox One for £370, which is decent, but I think it needs to come in at £350. I’ve got a PS4 and it’s sat waiting for new releases. I didn’t think an Xbox One was worth £430 at launch. The Xbox One at launch was more appealing due to Ryse, Forza 5 and Dead Rising 3. But I think 2014 is going to be a slow year for new releases across all formats.

Patcher thanks so much for visiting, reading, and commenting. The prices of the consoles will continue to come down. It’s just a matter of how long before they do. I do however, think there are some really great games coming this year. Games that shouldn’t be missed. Starting with this month’s releases of Titanfall & Infamous:Second Son. Don’t forget WatchDogs, Drive Club, The Crew, Sunset Overdrive, Destiny, and the Halo 2 Anniversary game…I MEAN THE UNANNOUNCED XBOX EXCLUSIVE!!!

Damn skippy, DamnSkippy! No one really understand the science behind the games that Sony & MS make available for their free games offering but it’s clear that MS isn’t as aggressive getting relevant games as Sony is.

NP Cicero. I did enjoy the letter!

The issue with these corporations though, like you said, once they have you on board, they don’t try much to keep you. Just like a mobile phone/cable/______ company, you name it, there’s always incentive to join and not a whole lot of incentive to stay, except for the experience being the determining factor. If you’re happy, you stay… But there’s always good coming from both sides and it takes one side to excel and create competition. With XBox Live we got PSN, with Plus we got Games with Gold. There was plenty before them and there’ll be plenty to come. It doesn’t matter who did it first just as long as someone’s doing it!

Nothing starts out great either. I would expect Games with Gold to come to par with the Plus offerings eventually just like PSN has done a lot of catching up to Live.

I’m in the same boat as you, Cicero, as far as my Xbox loyalty, but I’m adopting XB1 later on, maybe when a price drop or “slim” type model comes along. I knew I’d avoid some sweet-new-system-with-no-games syndrome and jump in when the major bugs were worked out. That said, I am pretty shocked by the issues and omissions of XB1, especially around chat (something they already did pretty well on 360 for the past few YEARS) and I always feel like a peasant when I see friends online on my 360 simply doing “XBOX ONE.”

I don’t know how it is now, but back around when the 360 came out and they’d sell controllers, the pricing was something like:

    Controller: 39.99
    Play n Charge Kit: 19.99

    Controller & Play n Charge Bundle: $59.99

So they actually charged you an extra penny to get the bundle. Same pattern with the pricing of really old On Demand titles (R6: Vegas for $20?), most of which I’m sure are already free on PS+. They never quite seem to understand how to reward loyalty the right way. As a consumer, I like the Xbox experience and want to stick with it, but boy I’m sure glad I’m not an early adopter on this one.

Yeahhhh… I stayed really patient with all the snags with my new XBox1, and was a proud owner as I was with the previous Xbox consoles released over the years. I bought it in late January, so excited to play Battlefield on it (I don’t want to talk about how that’s been going)… also I was following the news and info about Titanfall, and preordered it. How pissed off was I when the Xbox 1 dropped in price AND included a free digital copy of Titanfall??? If I had waited about a month I could have saved about $160, and no it was not f-ing worth it to have it a month sooner. Can’t play anything with my friends still on 360 which is sad but a tolerable reality… but barely any game content to download, no GTA V, constant stupid connection issues, brand new controller not holding a charge, Netflix still hasn’t worked even once on it, I could go on but…. the Titanfall bundle with price drop really put me over the edge. It really doesn’t pay to be loyal OR a U.S. citizen Xbox owner. It was bad enough my favorite game was released half baked and embarrassing… all this stuff is way to expensive to an average person to be so screwed up when released and then not fixed in an acceptable time frame. I don’t consider it money well spent at this point.
