Black Girls Code NY

Sights & Sounds From The Black Girls Code “Build A Videogame In A Day” Workshop

I recently had the pleasure of covering the “Build A Videogame In A Day” workshop given by the New York chapter of Black Girls Code and I have to say that our future is extremely bright. Young girls of all stripes came to code and code they did. With the help of the BETA platform, one-time paper schematics soon became 2D-Platformers that hearkened back to some of the time-tested games of our youth.

What really impressed me at the event was just how much was learned so quickly. I saw girls who hadn’t coded in their lives making levels and testing those levels to see if they played like they envisioned. You could see how much fun everyone was having while learning, smiling and laughing while they built their game.

Some of the amazing folks who put on and participated in the event were kind enough to share some of their stories and thoughts with me and those are all below. Take a couple of minutes and check those out.

Technical Leads Donna Knutt & Peta-Gay Clark share give us a quick overview of the event and a little background on Black Girls Code:

Next up is Quiessence Phillips who is Curriculum Development Lead with BGC, she gives us the run down on her role with the organization:

And last but not least are two of the founders of Hidden Level Games, they give us some background on their game making platform called “Beta”

Again I want to thank everyone involved for being such great sports and nurturing our future. You are all full of dopeness!!
